Her Side Of The Story: Grovetown Woman Says She Was Arrested For DUI After 0.00 BAC “Hand On The Bible, I Was Just Taking My Dogs To The Vet.” That’S How 43-Year-Old Lauren Magness Describes The Traff
Her side of the story: GROVETOWN WOMAN SAYS SHE WAS ARRESTED FOR DUI AFTER 0.00 BAC “Hand on the Bible, I was just taking my dogs to the vet.” That’s how 43-year-old Lauren Magness describes the traffic stop that ended with her being booked into the Columbia County jail Friday morning. Deputies charged her with DUI (drugs, less safe) and speeding after a 10 a.m. stop involving a motorcycle deputy. Magness says she questioned the speed she was accused of going, and things quickly escalated. “He accused me of being drunk, then called a supervisor and put me through all the field sobriety tests. I passed them. Then he said I must be on drugs. I told him I’m completely sober — I haven’t even had a drop of alcohol in over a year.” According to Magness, she agreed to a breath test, which she says came back 0.00, and also consented to a blood draw. “I even told him I took a tiny bit of Benadryl around 7 that morning, but that’s it. I wasn’t impaired. I was nervous because of how he was acting. He had me in tears.” She says she was detained for hours — from around 10 a.m. until about 4:30 p.m. — before being released. “Now I’ve got a mugshot out there and people are going to think I’m some drunk or on drugs. I’m a mom of two. I took my kids to school that morning. This is embarrassing and scary. It gives me anxiety to even leave my house now.” Magness believes body camera footage would support her claims. “It would show exactly how it went down. I can’t help if I was scared and came off awkward. That doesn’t justify hauling me off to jail.” From the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Maj. Steve Morris says EMS responded to the scene and drew blood, which has been sent to the GBI crime lab. “The deputies made the charge and we are waiting on blood results,” Morris said, noting results could take several weeks. Magness says she plans to fight the charge. “If everything comes back negative, I’ll prove them wrong. This is ridiculous and scandalous.”
