A Circle K employee is charged with murder in the shooting death of a man outside the Augusta convenience store where he worked. Jabari Leverette, 20, of Augusta, was booked Nov. 5 in Richmond County on charges of murder and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime.
Richmond County deputies said they were called to the Circle K at 1947 Gordon Highway, near Sibley Road, at 9:53 p.m. Nov. 4 after a report of shots fired and a person down. They found a man with at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Sheriff's Office Sgt. Walter McNeil said Leverette shot the man outside the store. Leverette was detained at the scene and taken to the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division for questioning before he was charged.
WRDW reported that the man had a knife when he was shot. Authorities had not confirmed that account, and no motive was given.
Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said his office was working to locate the victim's family and would not release his name until relatives were notified.
At least eight Richmond County deputy cars and several unmarked vehicles were at the scene at 10:45 p.m. Caution tape closed off the store's parking lot and some nearby homes.
Leverette was being held without bond Nov. 5 at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
