Two teens have been booked on murder charges in the Broad Street homicide investigation in Augusta after authorities identified the victim as 65-year-old Nathan Lewis Jr. Lamar Witt, 17, was booked July 31 in Richmond County on a murder charge, and Keshaun Walters, 19, was booked Aug. 1 on the same charge, according to booking records.
The Richmond County Coroner's Office identified Lewis as the man found dead in a trash can in the 600 block of Broad Street on July 30. Authorities said Lewis had been reported as homeless, and the coroner ruled his death a homicide.
Deputies were first called to Broad Street around 5 a.m. July 30 on a report of a broken window, according to the sheriff's office. While at the scene, deputies found Lewis' body, and Coroner Mark Bowen said he was pronounced dead at 7:28 a.m.
The sheriff's office had asked the public to help identify two people it wanted to question in the case. Authorities said a family member recognized the pair from a BOLO flyer and brought them to the sheriff's office, where investigators interviewed them before the arrests.
