A Columbia County veterinarian was arrested Oct. 4 after a dispute with a neighbor ended with a gunshot, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Emily Martin, 38, was booked that day on charges of tampering with evidence and discharge of firearms on or near a public highway or street.
Deputies were called around 7 p.m. after a woman reported that her mother had been threatened by a neighbor with a gun and that a popping sound had come from the backyard. When deputies arrived, Martin was outside crying and appeared to be intoxicated, according to an incident report.
Investigators said Martin told a deputy she had come home, noticed a white truck in her driveway and took a .40-caliber handgun from her vehicle before going into the backyard. She said she warned that she had a gun if anyone was inside, then fired one round toward the yard. After realizing the truck belonged to someone visiting a nearby home, she allegedly threw the gun over a fence.
The truck owner told deputies she had parked in the driveway briefly while visiting her daughter next door. Another witness said he saw Martin and the neighbor arguing and tried to calm the situation. Deputies later found the handgun behind the fence.
Martin was also the subject of an emergency suspension order issued in August by the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine.
