An Augusta woman was arrested after deputies found three young children alone, including two who were walking on a road early Sept. 22. Mikayla White, 27, was booked that day in Richmond County on three counts of deprivation of a minor.
According to deputies, a woman found two boys, ages 5 and 3, walking alone around 12:45 a.m. and took them back to their Augusta home after being unable to reach White. When deputies arrived, they found another child asleep inside.
The children were living in unsafe conditions, authorities said. Deputies reported the home had no electricity, no working toilet and trash, dirty clothes and feces scattered inside. They also reported maggots in and around the refrigerator, along with old food and bedbugs in the kitchen.
White later told deputies she had gone to a hospital to visit her grandmother. The children were turned over to White’s mother.
