The report
Destiny Shelhamer, 26, was booked Aug. 10 in Richmond County on a reckless conduct charge after authorities say her 9-year-old son took her loaded handgun to Richmond Hill Elementary in Augusta.
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office said Shelhamer left a Glock 19 unsecured in her vehicle while she briefly went to get something, and her son put the gun in his backpack before bringing it last Wednesday to Richmond Hill Elementary on Mura Drive. Another student later reported that the boy had a firearm in his bag, and school staff found the Glock 19 inside, the sheriff's office said. A round was loaded in the chamber, according to the sheriff's office.
