A Warrenville man was arrested after a teenager was injured in a road-rage shooting on Jefferson Davis Highway in North Augusta. Walter Smith, 25, was booked Sept. 9 in Aiken County on two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
North Augusta public safety officers said the shooting happened Sept. 6 along Jefferson Davis Highway. A teen passenger riding in another vehicle was grazed in the back of the neck and taken to an Augusta hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
According to an incident report, the teen and his older brother were driving toward Georgia after a family gathering when a silver Nissan began moving erratically around them, changing lanes repeatedly and braking in front of their vehicle. The encounter continued for about 10 minutes, and the Nissan's occupants allegedly shouted racial slurs before waving for the brothers to pass.
As the brothers tried to go around the car, someone in the Nissan fired at least two shots, the report says. One bullet went through the back passenger-side window and exited through the front driver-side window, striking the side mirror. Investigators linked a recovered firearm to Smith.
